Sonny's Tale

Sonny was one of the first rescue patients at CityVet.

He had been chained to a fence in a scrap yard in Dallas and brought to CityVet in poor health by a good samaritan. He was treated for several weeks in the hospital and then sat waiting for a new home, until...

At the end of a long and busy Saturday at the clinic, Dr. Cannon being the last to leave for the weekend was doing one last walk-through and saw Sonny sitting there alone in his run quietly, wagging his tail and looking at Dr. Cannon with what could only be described as a smile - as if he were saying "thank you". Dr. Cannon thought, why let him sit here alone one more night when he could enjoy the weekend with me. So, he decided to take him home for the weekend. He jumped right in to Dr. Cannon's truck as if he was meant to be there. On the way home, Dr. Cannon stopped at Sonny Bryan's, one of his favorite BBQ joints, to grab dinner. But since he couldn't bring his weekend guest inside, Dr. Cannon bought two plates of food and they sat outside on the sidewalk and enjoyed their first BBQ meal together. Dr. Cannon tells us he has never seen a dog look so happy and so thankful - receiving the care he needed, attention and affection he never had before, and now his own plate of BBQ. It was a moment Dr. Cannon describes as plain and simple goodness, and it was also the moment he realized this good dog's name would be Sonny, and that Sonny was meant to be with him and part of the Cannon family from then on.

Sonny is a constant reminder to all of us that we all need love and someone to care about us, and that when we care for others the good we give often comes back to us ten-fold. Life can be tough and lonely at times, but choosing to live it with a smile, with love and care for others, and with gratitude for what we have no matter how little it may be - life can be Sonny!

As a tribute to SONNY we ask that you to share your blessings by helping us help other animals that are alone, afraid and need care. We support local animal rescue groups and shelters in the communities where our clients and their pets live, work and play. We want to be part of the solution to improve the quality of life for pets while they are in shelters or in the care of rescue group to make them happier, healthier and more adoptable.

We offer complimentary exams to pets that have been adopted from local animal shelters and rescue groups. Click here to get your coupon.
